Just a few photos...

As some of you know, I've been trying to teach myself a bit about photo composition and photography in general, so I've been taking pictures of more than just teas and teawares (though most of what I've snapped are boring flower photos). Anyway, here are a few I took today:

Pink flower
Does anyone know what kind of flower this is, by the way? My dad says they are roses, and they have thorns, but as Salsero pointed out once before the petals don't look like typical rose petals.

Flower through hole
This is one of those instances when I wish I had more than a point and shoot. I could not for the life of me get my camera to focus on that darned blue flower!

Violet rose
I was actually going to throw this photo out, as I was trying to snap a typical flower picture with the stamen/etc. in focus. The way this one turned out is much more... expressive, even a bit sexy.

Rotten apples
I think this is my favorite of this bunch. The lighting turned out much better than it usually does in my pictures!

Anyway, I hope these are enjoyable, or at least a bit pleasing to the eye. If any of you photographers out there have any tips/critiques, have at 'em! I'll take all the help I can get.

Hi Brent, I think you did a great job with the third and fourth photograph. They evoke emotions. As you said, the 3rd photo evoked feminine sensuality, and the last evoked a certain sense fear of old age and death. You may not have intended them to be so, but the end results speak for themselves.

As a beginning enthusiast, you will probably find that some of the best pictures are accidental (i.e. you didn't expect it would come out like that).

The first and second photos are just regular snapshots to me.

My 2 cents worth...

Phyll,

I was also much more pleased with the second two. The third photo was, as I mentioned, accidental, but I actually was going for something with the picture of the apples (I suppose the success was still accidental, though :D), so I'm glad you picked up on it.

I like to shoot subjects that express age/decay; not in a creepy way or anything, I just think they have an interesting texture and character.

Fascination with the gimmickiness of the second photo may have gotten the best of me, I just couldn't let it go, heh. I appreciate the reality check. :)

Thanks for your 2 cents,

Brent

Great photos. I really like looking through the tunnel of despair - the flower is just on the other side. One need only keep walking to reach it!

Ack!

You warm me up with the sexy... then you throw old wrinklies at me! How dare you!

Team point and shoot ftw!

Nice photos, and quite varied in style.

The petals aren't inconsistent with roses. I say if it has thorns and five leaflets on the compound leaf and your dad thinks they are roses, then they are roses.

I like the third one, especially the slightly blue tint to the image.

Composition is simply everything, I think. There are of course various techniques to make "stunning" images with different photographic formats (e.g. HDR), but I've never understood the attraction.

They are quite likely to be roses - but old-fashioned 'apothecary' or dog type roses rather that more moden types. I used to have some that were similar in my garden at one of the houses I've lived in... they're still my favourites, much as I like all kinds of roses...

Thanks to everyone for their comments, especially Salsero and Veri-Tea for helping to identify the mystery flower!
